The SWFTL league match against Media Wales at Llandaff fields acted like a barometer of the true form of the ‘Canes players. Batting first the ‘Canes were quickly 2 wickets down. Sully received a chorus of boo’s from his team after blocking the first ball of the match. His demons, no doubt called on by the camera Phil Cadenne placed in his head several years ago, had Sully in two minds. Would he play his new game, block everything for 20 overs in case he got caught or, as the team demanded swing and risk scoring runs? To the ‘Canes delight he opted for the later and after being caught next ball by Barry wished he hadn’t.

Chris, along with the most of the rest of the team had no such dilemma, swinging from the hip he too was caught by Barry for 4. Nathan, Captain Badger, Bowen, Clive, Jaffa, Danny, Jimmy and Griff all left the field with strike rates around the 200 mark. A shame then that every family must have a black sheep or a Jeremy, and 7 runs off 14 balls on an artificial pitch that was a batters delight brought tuts from all members of the team. 10 difficult catches, mostly from Nathan, were put down by Media and the ‘Canes scored 188 off 18 overs.

The Canes went out to field and Badger threw Griff the ball after his stunning display last week. Griff produced another fine 2 over spell taking 2 wickets, Media failed to recover and were always well behind the run rate. Jimmy, Nathan, Jeremy and Clive all took wickets. Fine fielding culminated in a trademark one-handed low diving catch in near darkness looking into the trees from Griff in the covers. Media scored 108 off 18 overs and all rushed to congratulate the taker of ‘that catch’, hoping some of the magic would rub off on them.

MoM- Jimmy 34NO off 12 balls with the bat, and 2 overs 1 for 1 with the ball.

Special mention to Clives break dance fielding, and Danny’s sliding save on the boundary…putting his body on the line as usual. He even did his best to ‘out showboat’ griff by attempting a caught an bowled with his head.
