The Highway Hurricanes
— vs The Mitres

I’ve always said it’s nice to play the Mitres and leave the field with your head held high and I can assure all that the ‘Canes who took the field on Thursday did just that. A shame some members could only sit in pubs and bars with their heads held low after opting for the champions league final.

Griff opted to field first and after impressive figures from Mike D, Sully, Jeremy, and Danny this seemed the right option. Enter the Jaff who got tonked around the park like a pro on a premiership footballers Christmas party (0-36 off 2 overs). He was so frustrated at his beating he lay on the floor punching the turf as yet another four sailed to the boundary wishing he’d stayed home to revise.

An unbelievable run out of the season contender from Danny from the longest part of the long boundary had the canes back in raptures before we slumped again when Jimmy got carted for 6 towards the end. A respectable and easily beatable 125 was our target and with an average of 10 and over the canes sniffed victory.

Jaffa and Greg opened and raced away, the highlight being Jaffs second fifty and the inaugural wagon wheel. Runs continued but slowed down, mike nailed one over the square leg fielder to cries of “What kind of cricket shot was that?” from the bowler. Jeremy got bowled through the gate tippy taping and more wickets followed as the captain of the Mitres stepped up his bowling several notches.

After Jimmy was bowled by the penultimate ball it was up to Nareem our CBB’s import to get bat on ball. He did and Griff, captain fantastic heroically scampered through for the single ensuring a draw. Everyone cheered then legged it to the pub for the second half. We got there and it turned out the second half had kicked off. Those missing hang your heads in shame you missed the Mitres match, Danny’s run out and Jaffs fifty for 45 minutes of football. I hope you’re proud.

Man of the Match – Danny, great bowling solid batting and THE run out. (Sorry Jaff but your bowling figures came back to haunt you today).

I recon the lines have too much space between them.
A great 50 Jaff. Like Jim said ‘Its a shame they didn’t hit more cause Jaff could get a ton here.’
Followed by jeremys witty ‘He tried his best to get their score up with his bowling.’ (0-36 off 2 overs)

At the half way stage i was only going to need to draw half a circle, then you spoilt it all by hitting an uncharacteristic four on the leg side.

Next up – a wagon wheel of where jaffa conceded all his runs whilst bowling…

I love it, thats amazing! Twice on the bat in the first 3 games! Jeremy was quite right, once again i lost my head bowling on this wicket, it’s definately one for the batsmen! Can we get back in the nets on mondays to practice whipping them away down leg?!!
